The
ICOA Wins Award at International
Motorcycle Show in Toronto! |
The International Motorcycle
Show was held at the International
Centre in Toronto, Ontario
on January 5, 6 & 7,
2001. Steve Wallington, Ontario
Director, Larry Stutt and
James Elliot were the organizers
of the display. The display
featured an engine mounted
on a stand which rotated,
a display board containing
a head, cams, valves and
a piston and various easels
holding posters that illustrate
the electrical system, etc.
There were five CBX's in
the booth belonging to Steve,
Larry, James, Archie French
and Leigh Cohoe all of who
assisted in manning the booth
throughout the weekend. They
were joined by a contingent
from US including Dennis
McCartney, Jack Gutshall,
Mickey Cohen, Bill Hertling,
Mike Brown, Bob Buehler (All
from PA), Tom Snow (NC) and
Bob Miller (A non-member
Bob is the PA Director of
the HSTA and is the Editor
of the Turbo Club Newsletter
and a contributing writer
for CC Motorcycle). Together
the members spent the weekend
talking to many of the over
100,000 people that attended
the show. The show is the
largest motorcycle show in
North America and really
dwarfs the Cycle World shows
held in NY, Phila, etc. We
met many non-member CBX owners
and spent a fair amount of
time signing them up as members.
The members manning the display
booth were constantly busy
answering questions about
the CBX and the club.
Steve Wallington's bike
featured an alternative alternator
similar to the one shown
in the Spring 2000 issue
of the CBXpress so there
were lots of inquiries about
that. James Elliot's '80
always gets a lot of attention
thanks to the liberal application
of chrome parts, Cal Fab
swing arm, CB1100 wheels,
etc. Larry Stutt and Leigh
Cohoe's red '79's were nice
examples of stock or near
stock machines and were used
frequently to explain things
about the CBX. Archie French's
silver 79 was placed on an
elevated work stand so it
had center stage.
The organizers of the show
present Motorcycle Awards
of Excellence, called MAX
Awards for short, to individuals
and organizations that have
shown a commitment to the
sport and to helping others
in the process. In a televised
ceremony the ICOA was given
the award for the Best Club
Display at the 2001 show.
Steve Wallington accepted
the award on behalf of the
club. Some of the other award
winners were Ken Brown of
Toronto who won the Best
Individual fund-raiser Award
for raising over $10,000.00
for the Ride for Sight Charity
in Canada. Sun Microsystems
won for best corporate fundraiser
for raising over $93,000.00
for the same charity. The
Shadow Owners Group of Toronto
won an award for its parking
initiative which made the
point to the City of Toronto
that motorcycles were more
efficient to park and should
therefore be given additional
parking spaces. The televised
ceremonies were shown later
that day on the Canadian
Television Network.
