What
Products Do We Use When
We Go Riding? |
Cool/Cold
Weather:
We layer up. Below 50°:
Thermal underwear bottoms
under our leathers and tee
shirt then a turtleneck top
with a Gerbing Heated coat
on top of that with a riding
jacket with its liner in
place. Before we put on our
coats we put on a neck warmer
to cut out drafts. Put on
our helmet and add our Brosh
Winter Gloves. Dressed
like this we have been comfy
down to the upper 20’s.
Above 50°: all of above
with out the Gerbing. The
Gerbing coat is like a windbreaker
in thickness but has an electric
grid inside that extends
up into the collar. It plugs
into the same lead used by
our battery tenders.
Shoei
Helmets with Chatterbox
Radio Communicators and
Echo Quick Release Fasteners
We own many helmets including
AGV, HJC, Lazer and Nolan
have found Shoei to be the
quietest, most comfortable
and best constructed. We
replace helmets every five
years or after an “incident” in
the interest of safety.
We equip our helmets with Chatterbox
Intercoms HJC-50 when
it’s just rider and
passenger and with HJC
FRS 2 Way Radios when
riding in groups. We have
used these radios in group
riding for several years
now and find that being
able to talk to the other
riders is invaluable. The
lead rider can communicate
road conditions and other
potential hazards to the
group behind him. Riders
can speak to each other
and carry on conversations
or simply communicate their
needs for a food, fuel
or rest stop. Makes riding
more fun! Click here for
more details.
We also equip our helmets
with Echo Quick Release strap
fasteners because they make
it so easy to fasten the
strap on your helmet. The
instructions with the Echo
strap are easy to follow
and we take the excess helmet
strap and mate it up to the
other strap and use black
duct tape to secure it there
so it doesn’t flap
in the breeze. If you’re
concerned about safety, we
have witnessed several accidents
that involved head impacts
on helmets with Echo fasteners
on them and the fasteners
held just fine.
Final item is the smallest
but may be the most important:
Ear Plugs. We don’t
ride without them for two
reasons.
First, they enhance the
pleasure of the ride by greatly
diminishing the wind noise
and second, it has been shown
in studies that hearing loss
does occur when one is exposed
to loud noise over long periods
of time. Ear plugs really
do make the ride more enjoyable
and we recommend them on
that basis alone! We wear
the simple yellow ones.
Boots
We use Bates Boots made
in California under normal
conditions and put on our Brosh
Rain Overshoes if it
rains. We recommend Bates
boots because the heel and
sole can be replaced by a
shoemaker. We just retired
a pair purchased in ’91
that had been re-soled and
heeled quite a few times
and in several “incidents” along
the way. They gave us great
service. We highly recommend
these high quality American
made boots. www.batesleathers.com
Pants
We wear everything from
leather to textile depending
on what the weather is. Leathers
like First Gear or AGV Universals
are a good value. Don’t
need to spend more than $200
for these. Shop around. We
also endorse the synthetics
from people like TourMaster
and First Gear and long as
they contain body armor.
When it gets hot we go to
either Brosh
Power Jeans or Brosh
Cool pants. These pants
have Kevlar in the knees
and hips and can be equipped
with T-Pro
armor in the knees. We
always add the armor for
extra protection.
Jackets
Until a few years ago leather
was the only way to get proper
protection while riding.
Then manufacturers like TourMaster
and Joe Rocket entered the
market with textile coats
made from Cordura and other
tough fabrics. These coats
contained padding in the
elbows shoulders and spine
area and were a real breakthrough
as a lower price effective
alternative to leather. We
wear Brosh coats in the summer
and winter now because they
offer the comfort and protection
we want.
Brosh
Summer Jackets

by Brosh uses both Dupont
technologies: Kevlar®,
for safety and the high technology:
Cool Max® - a certified
Dupont fabric for maximum
air flow and cooling of the
body and moisture management.
Super light and airy, Cool
Max ® breathing material
is used throughout the coat.
When combined with the wide
open-mesh material under
the arms, on the sleeve cuffs

Gloves
Probably the most important
item you should wear when
riding. What we wear depends
on the temperature outside.
In the winter or when the
temp is below 55° we
wear either Brosh Waterproof
Winter Gloves or the Chiba
Sports Sub Zero gloves. This
isn’t as critical as
it used to be with the advent
of heated grips. in temps
from 55° to about 80° we
wear leather gloves with
carbon fiber inserts and
double layers in the palm
area or Chiba sports Voyager
Gloves. From 80° up we
go to Chiba Maverick gloves
for the great ventilation
and protection they offer. Click
here for more info on gloves
