The
CBXMan.com Tire Recommendations
- Dennis
McCartney, President
CBXMan.com |
The CBX can be equipped
with various types of tires.
The selection will depend
on you.
Your choices can range from
low mileage sport type tires
to long wearing touring tires.
We offer a range that we
think will cover any of your
specific needs including
price.
As a starting point here
is what Honda chose to equip
the CBX with from the factory:

Comment
The
choice between whether to use
am H-Rated tire (Safe at sustained
speeds
of 130 MPH) or V-Rated Tires
(Safe at sustained speeds of
150 MPH) is up to the rider
to
choose but in some instances
the choice is limited to what
is offered by the manufacturer.
There is no reason not to
use
a V rated tire on a CBX it's
just a bit of overkill.
We also do not recommend using
130/90 tires on the 2.15 x18
79 CBX Rear rim. Doing so
squeezes the tire on the rim
and presents the wrong profile
to the pavement. You find "
yourself ""falling"" into
turns and wearing out the center
of your tire prematurely." We have personal experience
on this.
Tread Life
It is impossible to predict
or tell what tread life
to expect from a tire because
tread life "depends
on riding style, terrain
conditions and whether
you keep your tires properely
inflated." Riding
Style and where do you ride
have absolutely
the biggest effect on tread
life.
Slow and Conservative on
Interstate highways = Longer
tread life.
Fast and aggressive on
twisty mountain roads =Lower
tread
life.
Remember
the CBX is a heavy bike and
if it drive
it like a sport bike
in the
twistys
it will eat
tires. Guys who live
in the mountains and
ride
aggressively
like we do are getting
5m to 6m
from a front and 4 to
5m from a rear. These
mileage
figures must also take
into account
that we frequently have
passengers on board.
Now for our recommendations.
Note that these are based
on our own personal
experience in owning and
riding CBX's along those
of other CBX owners we have
spoken
to. Your actual results and
experience may differ greatly
from those shown here.

shown here were current April

The best all around combination
tire we have used. It’s
a great tire for sport
riding or for
touring on a CBX. Great handling
that never let us down in
wet or dry riding conditions.
conditions. Has been popular
over the years with owners
of 1981 and 82 models but
we have
had great experience with them on our 79 & 80 models.

The CBX came with Dunlops originally
and these are the current Dunlops
we suggest for the CBX.
Factory
Description
"Successor to the K591 sport tire,
the V-rated GT501 features bias-ply
construction and
incorporates a radial-style tread
pattern for contemporary styling
and a larger
footprint.
An optimized profile creates a larger contact patch for increased cornering confidence,
with smooth side-to-side transitions.
Increased
tread-to-void ratio delivers
superior grip in dry conditions,
with
no loss of grip
in wet weather.
Increased center tread depth provides improved wear characteristics and enhanced
water clearance.
Rear compound increases grip and wear resistance. "

A good quality low priced tire
for the budget minded rider.
Do not expect to get the same
ride and
handling from these tires as
you will from higher priced tires.

These are the tires, in
this combination that were written
up by the group headed by John
Swift in
the Fall 2003 CBXpress magazine
article.
We are currently testing
this combination ourselves.
If you are curious to see how
we like them drop
us a note.
